Sunsail Yacht Charter – Tahiti
French Polynesia, located in the South Pacific, consists of five main groups of islands, the most well known of which is Tahiti. SYC’s base is located on the island of Raiatea and is the perfect starting point for an unbeatable Tahitian sailing holiday, discovering the Society Islands, comprising of Tahiti, Moorea, Bora-Bora (arguably the most beautiful lagoon in the world), Tahaa and Raiatea.
A landscape of jagged volcanic peaks juxtaposed with lush vegetation and stunning waterfalls, Tahiti is considered by many to be paradise on earth. The islands offer a beguiling mix of breathtaking lagoons, exotic sea-life, traditional culture and sophisticated resorts, with plenty to explore both at sea and on land.
Sailing in Tahiti
A yacht charter in Tahiti is an opportunity to sail in a cruising ground that allows both for line-of -sight navigation in the calm waters behind the reefs and also more exhilarating open-water passages.
The tidal range is negligible, but narrow passes between reefs demand careful navigation. Wind speeds generally range from 10 – 15 knots and temperatures range from a low of 25 C (77 F) to a high of 35 C (95 F) in summer.
To make sure that you get the most out of your yacht charter, all yachts are equipped with the highest specification kit to help provide comfort, performance and fun onboard; so all that’s left for you to do is relax and enjoy your sailing holiday with family and friends.
What To Bring: Beach towel; Sunscreen; Swimwear; Polarised sunglasses (essential for seeing fringing reefs); Footwear - solid footwear is advisable (an old pair of sneakers are ideal); Broad brimmed hat; Light clothing that will provide protection from the sun; A tracksuit or warm clothing for the evenings; Soft luggage where possible; Smart/Casual clothing for visiting resorts.
Whether you are in search of golden beaches and turquoise seas, ancient temples and local handcrafts, chic restaurants and stylish shopping or spectacular snorkelling and scuba diving, you will find whatever you are looking for on a sailing holiday in Tahiti.
Tahiti boasts an idyllic climate. From September to May the weather is warmer and more humid, from April to August is cooler and drier. There is occasional heavy rainfall from December to February, but the sun still shines and there are refreshing trade winds.
The winds are at their strongest in July and August, making for some spirited sailing.
The prevailing winds are easterly and when these reach 20 – 25 knots (23 - 28 Mph) the sea can become choppy with swells of 3 – 5 feet. Reasonable previous experience is required for a Tahiti yacht charter, particularly given the careful navigation required between ‘passes’ and in coral areas.
