Embarkation Information:

If you are booking a bareboat charter without a skipper there will be a detailed chart briefing on your cruising area and also a thorough briefing on your yacht, its operation and the equipment aboard. This will be held at the base prior to you taking charge of the yacht. For the novice sailor we recommend a sail guide or instructional skipper. Please note that if during the briefing the base decides that you must have a skipper, you will need to pay the additional amount applicable directly to the base. When adding crew to a bareboat, remember that your crew will require berths and provisioning for the duration of your charter. Since there are a limited number of cabins aboard each of the yachts, please be certain that the number of people in your party PLUS the number of crew you intend to hire do not exceed the maximum for the boat you would like to charter.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Cuba is a very special destiny and certainly needs a little more information than others. We hope you brought enough sense for adventure to enjoy your holidays at full. Anyway a few tips can be helpful.

Beacons

This is the American system, so the colours are on the “wrong“ side for Europeans.

RRR means you have to leave the Reds on Right when Returning to the marina.

Food

Better buy enough here, because underway and in other marinas there might be nothing. A few extra bottles of cheap rum are always useful to exchange them for fresh fish or langostas” with the local fishermen on the sea. Don’t do this in the marinas, as it will get the Cubans in big trouble. In Cienfuegos you can find fresh fruits and/or vegetables in the local mercados.

Authorities

In every marina you enter, the local authorities will pay you a visit – customs and coast guard. These people check the boat papers, crew list, passports and sometimes make a complete control of the yacht. They are just doing their job and it always helps to give them a drink while doing so. Advise them in time whenever you want to leave again.

The base

You’re welcome to embark your yacht after 16.00 pm. Tell the base ASAP the time you want to leave the marina so they can advise the authorities on time.

Disembarkation is always before 17.00 pm the last day of your charter. If agreed upon, you can pass this last night on the yacht and leave at 9.00 o’clock the next morning. The phone no. in the office is 01432/55.61.19 or the mobile 05/285.86.85.

The use of the showers and toilets is until 18.00 pm every day, but most of the time there will be somebody there until 20.00 pm. Opening time is at 08.00 am.

On demand the base can organise you some breakfast in Club Cienfuegos. Also note that there is one of the finest restaurants of Cienfuegos on the second floor.

Your yacht

In the ship’s documents you’ll find the ”cruise information list” where you can write downanything that brakes or gets lost during your charter. Please check the motor oil daily and navigate at no more than 2,500 revolutions. Don’t leave the outboard engine on the dinghy if you are trawling it, which is to be avoided as much as possible anyway. Note again that navigation at night is strictly forbidden (too many dangerous reefs) and Cuban citizens are not allowed on board (except officials and the skipper). Don’t forget to fill up the fuel tank(s) at your return. This has to be done in the other marina just next to the base and probably the authorities will come on board there.

In general

For international phone calls you will have to go to the nearest ETECSA (Cuban telephone company) or to hotel JAGUA nearby which also has internet service. You’ll have to buy a telephone card (5, 10 or 20,- CUC) locally. The use of credit cards is still not very common in Cuba, so get enough cash in advance. (BFI-bank or CADECA) Everything now has to be paid in Peso Convertible (CUC).
