Introduction to a Polynesian dream Only by sailing on the lagoons and waters of the ocean, in the same way as the Polynesians in their canoes, will you fully experience the magic of the Leeward Islands. Let trade winds scented with the fragrant mix of orchid, frangipani, and vanilla carry you to the islands that have cast their mesmerizing spell on writers, painters, and centuries of sailors. Only then will you believe that heaven exists on earth.

Sailing the Leeward Islands is like being on the movie set of South Pacific. You find yourself singing show tunes as you sail up to Apu Bay in Tahaa. You move for the night and have your first night's dinner at the little French restaurant there. The spectacular profile of Bora Bora beckons in the distance, and after an exciting long reach, you anchor at a "motu" of the western coast. Pictures of Bora Bora in late afternoon lights are just incredible. The Bora Bora lagoon is beautiful, a place you will like to get lost in for a long time. As fare as nightlife goes, you enjoy Bloody Mary's, a popular sport on the island, as well as the resort on the lagoon. There are several beautiful anchorages on Raiatea, but the highlight is your dinghy adventure up the Aoppamao River, surrounded by tropical jungle on both sides. A visit to the sacred religious sites in Opoa is also very interesting. From Raiatea you sail to Huahine, another thrilling reach over open sea. You find the passages through the reefs to be well marked and not terribly tricky to negotiate, which is a relief. Inside the reefs, the lagoons are smooth, easy sailing. Huahine's Fare district has several small interesting restaurants, plus a relaxed bar. The snorkelling is especially good in Avea Bay, where you anchor overnight before heading back to Tahaa and Raiatea. More with The Moorings
