Tucked between
Australia's tropical Queensland peninsula and the protective coral fringe of the Great
Barrier Reef, the Whitsunday Islands are the Coral Sea's gift to sailors.

Bareboat Yacht Charters:
If you fancy spending your holiday at the helm, sailing wherever the wind takes
you, then a bareboat charter is the way to go. You choose what boat you want and
crew it yourself. First timers are fully briefed before leaving, but if you are
a little unsure, a skipper will stay on board for the duration of your trip or
until you're at ease. The channels between the islands are safe, calm and deep
and the majority of the islands are within line of sight from one another. There
are plenty of safe protected anchorages throughout the islands.
Fully Crewed Yacht Charters:
If you'd prefer to be looked after by a skipper & crew, then select your
dream boat and leave it to the professionals. Fully crewed vessels cruise the
islands by day and tuck into secluded coves at night. Some even sail to the
outer reef. How much you participate is entirely up to you. The skipper &
crew are more than happy to show the ropes and will even hand over the helm.
Start your day with a short swim before breakfast, a sail to a deserted island
beach for a spot of snorkelling, fishing, island exploring and sunbaking, or
just laze on the deck with a good book. All food and equipment (snorkelling
gear, fishing gear, linen, etc) is provided. There's no work, so just relax and
watch the world float by.

CLIMATE-
The Whitsunday Islands are located a
little over a hundred nautical miles north of the Tropic of Capricorn, between 20 degrees
and 21 degrees South. They are cooled by the trade winds for most of the year and have an
excellent climate.
The waters are protected by the Coral
Sea and Great Barrier Reef and most islands are surrounded by a fringing reef system.
Seasons tend to be dictated by school holidays rather than weather, so some of the best
sailing can be found in the off-peak periods.
The summer months,
November to April, are warm and sultry with January and February being the hottest months.
The wet season is between January-March. And cyclones, if they do occur, are most likely
between February & March. Northerly winds in summer cause the temperature and humidity
to soar. Average temperatures in the summer are 31C / 88F.
From April through
October the islands and most of the coast of Queensland are fanned by a 10 -25 knot south
easterly trade wind. Peak tourist activity is between May and October when southerners
escape their colder winter. Winters are said by many to be the perfect climate- warm by
day and cool by night. Average high is 23-28C / 72-82F. July is the coldest month (23C/72F
avg high), but the temperature rarely drops below 11 degrees C (52 F). The water
temperature is between 20-25C (68-77F).
The best holiday months in the
Whitsundays are from May to December.

The Whitsunday Islands were originally
formed by volcanic action, but after the last glacial period about 30-50,000
years ago, the sea level rose, leaving the higher coastal peaks as islands.
Today, these
islands are considered to be among the safest, most beautiful cruising grounds in the
world. The 74 islands offer year round sailing in typical trade wind conditions. The Great
Barrier Reef to the east of the islands protects them from ocean swells and the close
proximity of the islands to each other and to the mainland, make for safe, easy passage
making.
Right in the middle
of the group is Hamilton Island, with its own airport, 4 star resort hotel and yacht
harbour. Flight duration to Hamilton Island is from Sydney - 2:10 hrs, Melbourne - 2:40
hrs, Brisbane - 1:20 hrs and Cairns- 1:00 hr. You will step almost literally from your
plane onto your yacht.

Then set off on
your cruise among the islands. The islands, mostly unspoilt National Parks, have
10 resorts which vary from 5 star luxury to old style cabins. The peace and
isolation of the uninhabited anchorages can be contrasted with dinner and
frivolity ashore.
Snorkel the
fringing reefs, loaf about on a beaches of dazzling white silica sand or take a walk
ashore to visit aboriginal rock paintings. There is plenty to keep you as active as you
want to be. Choose from 128 principal anchorages throughout the island chain to set your
anchor, drop a line over the side and maybe take a fish for the barbecue.
The warm tropical
waters are home to manta rays and dolphins which are common sights. From July to
September, the annual humpback whale migration passes between the islands and the Great
Barrier Reef. Green-backed turtles lay their eggs in the sand of isolated beaches in the
region. Delicate coastal communities of flora and fauna are protected in rugged national
parks; the remnants of the world's oldest continuously surviving rainforest thrive deep in
restricted areas of State Forest.
